info about the country

Canada's capital, Ottawa, is a city that perfectly combines history, culture, and politics, embodying Canadian identity and diversity in an international environment. Located in the province of Ontario, Ottawa stands as a symbol of the nation's rich heritage and multicultural fabric.

The Fascinating Story of Ottawa's Selection as Capital

Before European colonization, the area that is now Ottawa was inhabited by Indigenous peoples. The name «Ottawa» is derived from «Odawa,» a term used by the Anishinaabe people, meaning «traders.» This name underscores the region's historical significance as a center for trade and cultural exchange long before it became the nation's capital.

In 1857, Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom designated Ottawa as the capital of the United Canadas, a British colony at the time. The choice of Ottawa was influenced by its strategic location on the border between Ontario and Quebec. This location was seen as a compromise that balanced the interests of both English-speaking and French-speaking communities. Additionally, Ottawa's position along the Ottawa River provided natural defense and facilitated transportation and trade, making it an ideal capital.
